18-Day Uganda Birding & Wildlife Adventure: The Ultimate Avian Safari

This 18-day Uganda birding safari takes you from the shores of Lake Victoria to the ancient rainforests of the Albertine Rift, offering a chance to spot the prehistoric Shoebill, the elusive Green-breasted Pitta, and the majestic mountain gorilla.
Day 1: Welcome to the Pearl of Africa
Upon your arrival at Entebbe International Airport, our professional guide will transfer you to your hotel. If time permits, you can kick-start your journey with birding in the Entebbe Botanical Gardens. Keep your binoculars ready for the Great Blue Turaco, Ross’s Turaco, and the African Harrier Hawk.

Day 2: The Search for the Shoebill at Mabamba Swamp
After an early breakfast, we travel to Mabamba Swamp, a Ramsar site and Important Bird Area (IBA). Navigating narrow papyrus channels by canoe, we search for the iconic Shoebill Stork. Other sightings often include the Lesser Jacana, Papyrus Gonolek, and the Blue-breasted Bee-eater.

Day 3: Rhino Tracking & Journey to Masindi
We head north toward Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, the only place in Uganda to see rhinos in the wild. After a successful on-foot rhino tracking experience, we continue birding toward Masindi. Look out for the White-crested Turaco and various kingfishers along the route.

Day 4: Birding the Famous “Royal Mile”
Today, we explore the Royal Mile in Budongo Forest, arguably one of the best birding spots in Africa. We search for localized specialties like the Chocolate-backed Kingfisher, Puvel’s Illadopsis, and the Nahan’s Francolin. The canopy also hides the White-thighed Hornbill and the Uganda Woodland Warbler.

Day 5: Murchison Falls National Park & Boat Cruise
We enter Murchison Falls National Park, visiting the “Top of the Falls” where the Nile explodes through a narrow gorge. In the afternoon, a boat cruise along the Victoria Nile reveals African Skimmers, Rock Pratincoles, and giant Nile crocodiles.

Day 6: Savanna Birding & Big Game Drive
Spend a full day exploring the northern delta of Murchison Falls. We hunt for the Abyssinian Ground Hornbill, Secretary Bird, and Denham’s Bustard. Between sightings, you will encounter lions, Rothschild giraffes, and massive herds of Cape buffalo.

Day 7: Transfer to Kibale Primate Capital
We journey toward Kibale National Park, passing through lush tea plantations and rural homesteads. Upon arrival, we bird the forest edges, home to 13 primate species and the stunning Black-billed Turaco.

Day 8: Chimpanzee Trekking & Green-breasted Pitta
The morning begins with an exhilarating chimpanzee trek. Afterward, we search for the “Holy Grail” of Uganda birding: the Green-breasted Pitta. Other forest residents include the African Broadbill and the Scaly-throated Honeyguide.

Day 9: Bigodi Wetland & Kazinga Channel
We visit Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, famous for the Great Blue Turaco and Papyrus Canary. Later, we transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park for a late afternoon boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel, spotting Pink-backed Pelicans and African Skimmers.

Day 10: Birding the Rift Valley Savanna
Enjoy a full day in Queen Elizabeth National Park. We explore the Kasenyi tracks for the Bateleur Eagle, Martial Eagle, and the White-tailed Lark. The park’s diverse ecosystem also supports tree-climbing lions and large elephant herds.

Day 11: Ishasha’s Tree-Climbing Lions to Bwindi
We drive through the Ishasha Sector, keeping an eye out for the famous tree-climbing lions. As we ascend toward the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, the birdlife shifts to Albertine Rift endemics.

Day 12: Mountain Gorilla Trekking
Today marks the highlight of your safari. After a briefing, you will hike into the ancient rainforest for a one-hour encounter with a mountain gorilla family. This life-changing experience is set against a backdrop of incredible biodiversity.

Day 13: Birding the Buhoma Sector
We spend the day “penetrating the impenetrable” forest. Bwindi is a haven for endemics like the Short-tailed Warbler, Rwenzori Batis, and the African Green Broadbill.

Day 14: Birding “The Neck” to Ruhija
