Hiking Mount Karisimbi: Conquering Rwanda’s Highest Volcanic Peak
A safari to Rwanda reaches its pinnacle when you encounter the glorious Virunga Mountains. This range consists of eight majestic peaks, with Mount Karisimbi standing as the highest at 4,507 meters. The mountain derives its name from the Kinyarwanda word Amasimbi, which translates to “white shell” or “snow.” This refers to the white cap that often covers the summit during the dry seasons of June, July, and August.
The Two-Day Ascent to the Summit
Unlike the one-day hike up Mount Bisoke, Mount Karisimbi requires a two-day expedition. Because the trek is physically demanding, hikers spend a night camping on the mountain to regain their momentum.
-
Day One: The journey typically begins at the base of Mount Bisoke. Hikers trek for approximately seven hours through diverse vegetation zones, reaching a midway camp at an altitude of 3,700 meters.
-
Day Two: After an early breakfast, you face the final challenge. This last stretch often involves navigating thick fog, muddy trails, and strong winds. Upon reaching the top, you are rewarded with panoramic views of the entire Volcanoes National Park before a six-hour descent back to the starting point.
A Night Under the Stars
Spending a night in the middle of a volcano is a bucket-list experience for hiking enthusiasts. While temperatures can drop low enough to turn water into ice, a warm campfire and heavy clothing turn the freezing atmosphere into a cozy setting for socializing.
With no Wi-Fi or telephone networks, social media becomes irrelevant. This isolation allows campers to truly connect, share stories, and learn about Rwandan culture. Watching the sunrise from this altitude is a spectacular sight, as the sun appears to rise directly from the mountain peaks, illuminating the craters of Bisoke, Gahinga, and Mount Muhabura.
Securing Your Hiking Permits
To reach the summit, you must possess a valid hiking permit. As of March 2026, the standard cost for a Mount Karisimbi hiking permit is $400 for international tourists. Other rates include:
-
Foreign Residents: $250
-
East African Citizens: $200
-
Rwandan Citizens: RWF 30,000
We highly recommend booking your permits in advance through a reliable tour operator to ensure availability. Please note that the permit fee covers park rangers and guides but excludes costs for porters, tents, and personal cooks.
Wildlife and Conservation Highlights
The Virunga region is the “cleanest country in Africa” and offers much more than just a hike. As you traverse the slopes, you may spot:
-
Primates: Magnificent mountain gorillas and rare golden monkeys.
-
Avian Life: Exotic birds inhabiting the Hagenia-Hypericum forests.
-
History: The Dian Fossey tomb sits nestled between Mount Karisimbi and Mount Bisoke, offering a chance to pay respects to the famous primatologist.
Best Time for the Trek
While you can hike year-round, the dry seasons (January to March and July to October) provide the best conditions. Muddy walkways make the steep slopes much more difficult to navigate during the wet months.
