A Guide to Lwiro Primate Sanctuary

Lwiro Primate Sanctuary sits in the southeastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo. This tropical rainforest sanctuary neighbors Kahuzi-Biega National Park, a site famous for its lowland gorillas.

Wildlife and Biodiversity at Lwiro

Currently, the sanctuary provides a home for approximately 85 chimpanzees and 106 monkeys. Visitors can also spot various other species, including porcupines, turtles, and diverse bird species.

The sanctuary is located just 4km from Kahuzi-Biega. The nearby city of Bukavu serves as the main gateway for travelers. Despite being in a politically unstable region, the sanctuary welcomes between 2,000 and 3,000 guests every year.

A Legacy of Primate Conservation

The sanctuary leads the way in providing shelter and care for orphaned chimpanzees. Recently, other conservation NGOs have joined the mission. These groups work to sensitize local communities about wildlife protection. Many experts now consider Lwiro the premier center for chimpanzee rehabilitation.

UNESCO recognized Lwiro as a World Heritage site in 1997. Today, a dedicated team of 46 staff members manages the daily operations. This team includes:

  • Veterinary experts and specialized caregivers.

  • Support staff, including cooks, buyers, and domestic aids.

Planning Your Visit

The center remains open for tourism throughout the year. Many travelers choose to combine a visit to Lwiro with a gorilla trekking expedition in Kahuzi-Biega National Park.
