Exploring the Gorilla Sectors of Bwindi
The gorilla families in Bwindi are scattered across four distinct sectors. Each location offers a unique terrain and experience for group wildlife safaris in Uganda.
1. Buhoma Sector (Northern Bwindi)
The Buhoma sector is the most popular destination in the park. Because it features up-to-date infrastructure and state-of-the-art lodges, it remains the most developed area. Additionally, its proximity to the Kanungu district makes it the easiest sector to access from Queen Elizabeth National Park. Notably, Buhoma was the first sector to open in 1993, following the habituation of the Mubare family.
2. Nkuringo Sector (Northwestern Bwindi)
Located close to Buhoma, the Nkuringo sector is famous for its steep and challenging terrain. Therefore, it is the preferred choice for physically fit nature lovers. Furthermore, this sector offers the best Batwa community walks. The Batwa are among the oldest ethnic groups in Africa and lived within the forest long before it became a UNESCO World Heritage site.
3. Ruhija Sector (Eastern Bwindi)
The Ruhija sector offers the densest vegetation cover and stunning panoramic views of the park. While the terrain is relatively steep, it remains navigable for most trekkers. Specifically, this sector is home to prominent families such as the Mukiza and Kyaguliro.
4. Rushaga Sector (Southern Bwindi)
Rushaga is the largest sector in the park and hosts the highest number of mountain gorillas. Because it is situated near Lake Bunyonyi, visitors often enjoy beautiful crater lake views after their trek. Indeed, this sector is strategically located near local communities, offering a variety of accommodation facilities.
Costs of Gorilla Trekking Permits in Uganda
The cost of a gorilla trekking permit in Uganda varies based on the visitor’s residency status. Currently, the rates are as follows:

Foreign Non-Residents: USD 800 per person.

East African Citizens: UGX 300,000 per person.
Importantly, a significant percentage of these fees directly funds wildlife conservation efforts to protect the mountain gorillas and their fragile habitat.

The Dry Seasons (June–Sept & Dec–Feb)
During these months, the trails are relatively dry and passable. Because the vegetation is sparser, visitors enjoy clearer views of the gorillas. Consequently, the warm conditions make this the peak season for trekking.
The Wet Seasons (March–May & Oct–Nov)
However, the wet season presents unique advantages, especially for budget travelers. Specifically, many lodges lower their prices due to lower guest turnout. Additionally, this is the prime time for bird watching in Uganda. You can spot rare migratory species such as:
