Rhino Trekking at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary
Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is a vital conservation project and a premier stop for any wildlife enthusiast. Located in the Nakasongola District, the sanctuary sits approximately 176km north of Kampala along the Gulu Highway. This strategic location makes it an ideal halfway point for travelers heading to the famous Murchison Falls National Park. While the sanctuary is accessible by car or motorcycle, hiring a professional tour guide and driver ensures a seamless and informative journey.
A Remarkable Conservation Success Story
Uganda’s history with rhinos is both tragic and inspiring. By 1983, both black and white rhinos had been wiped out in the country due to poaching and civil unrest. To reverse this, Rhino Fund Uganda, a non-profit organization, partnered with the Uganda Wildlife Authority to reintroduce the species.
The breeding program officially launched at Ziwa in 2005 with just six southern white rhinos—four from Kenya and two from the USA. The project has been a massive success. As of March 2026, the national rhino population has grown to 60 individuals, with approximately 48 rhinos currently thriving at the Ziwa sanctuary.
The Mission: Restoring Uganda’s Heritage
The primary mission of the sanctuary is to create a safe, 24-hour protected environment where rhinos can multiply. The ultimate goal is to translocate these rhinos back into Uganda’s major national parks. In fact, a historic milestone was reached on March 17, 2026, when the first rhinos were successfully reintroduced to Kidepo Valley National Park after a 43-year absence.
Through community empowerment programs, the sanctuary also educates both Ugandans and international visitors about the importance of protecting these magnificent creatures as part of the country’s rich natural heritage.
