Mgahinga Gorilla National Park: Where Gold Meets Silver
Sitting on just 33.7 square kilometers, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is the smallest national park in Uganda. Its name comes from the local word “Gahinga,” which describes the piles of volcanic stones cleared from farmland. Despite its size, this park is a biodiversity powerhouse within the Virunga Conservation Area, bordering Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park and the DR Congo’s Virunga National Park.
Top Attractions and Wildlife
The British administration first designated Mgahinga as a game sanctuary in 1930, and it officially became a national park in 1991. The park provides a critical refuge for:
-
Mountain Gorillas: It serves as the home for the habituated Nyakagezi gorilla group.
-
Endangered Golden Monkeys: These vibrant primates roam the bamboo forests and are unique to this region.
-
Birdlife: Over 79 species thrive here, including the spectacular Rwenzori Turaco.
Key Activities in Mgahinga
1. Gorilla Trekking
Gorilla tracking is the premier activity in Mgahinga. Unlike the larger Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Mgahinga offers a more intimate experience with a single habituated group.
-
The Briefing: Visitors report to the park headquarters at 8:00 AM for a safety briefing.
-
The Trek: Professional guides lead you into the jungle to find the Nyakagezi family.
-
Requirements: You need a moderate level of fitness, sturdy hiking boots, and a surgical mask to wear while near the gorillas.
2. Golden Monkey Tracking
Mgahinga is the only place in Uganda where you can track the rare Golden Monkeys. This “golden opportunity” allows you to watch these playful primates jump through the bamboo canopy. It is an affordable and highly active alternative to gorilla trekking.
3. Volcano and Mountain Climbing
For adventure seekers, the park offers three iconic volcanic peaks. You can reach the summit of each in a single day:
-
Mount Muhabura (4,127m): A challenging 8-hour hike covering 12km. The summit offers views of the Rwenzori Mountains and Lake Edward.
-
Mount Sabinyo: This hike takes about 8 hours. At the peak, you can literally stand in three countries at once: Uganda, Rwanda, and the DR Congo.
-
Mount Gahinga: A shorter trek that leads you through beautiful bamboo and montane forests.
4. The Batwa Cultural Experience
Mgahinga offers a profound cultural encounter with the Batwa people, the “Keepers of the Forest.” Historically, the Batwa lived as hunter-gatherers within these woods. Today, they lead visitors through the forest, sharing their ancient history, survival skills, and authentic cultural performances.
