Detailed 4-Day Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer from Kampala to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Your adventure begins with an early-morning pickup from your hotel or residence in Kampala or Entebbe. Meet your professional safari driver-guide and begin the journey to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in southwestern Uganda.

The drive generally takes approximately 8–9 hours, depending on your departure point, road conditions, traffic, and scheduled stops.

Along the way, stop at the Equator landmark in Kayabwe for memorable photographs and an opportunity to observe the famous water experiment. Continue toward Mbarara, where you can enjoy lunch before proceeding through the beautiful countryside to Bwindi.

Bwindi is internationally recognized for its mountain gorilla population, ancient rainforest, and exceptional biodiversity. It provides one of the world’s most remarkable settings for responsible wildlife encounters.

Arrive at your lodge in the afternoon or evening, check in, and relax as you prepare for the following day’s gorilla habituation experience.

Accommodation: Silverback Lodge, Bwindi Haven Lodge, Buhoma Community Bandas, or a suitable alternative based on availability and trekking arrangements.

Meals: Lunch and dinner, according to your confirmed package.

Day 2: Gorilla Habituation Experience and Transfer to Mgahinga

After an early breakfast, travel to the designated park headquarters in the Rushaga sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for your gorilla habituation briefing.

Park staff will explain the activity, conservation guidelines, and safety regulations before you enter the forest with authorized trackers and researchers.

The gorilla habituation experience offers a unique opportunity to observe a semi-habituated mountain gorilla family while learning about the process through which gorillas gradually become accustomed to human presence.

Follow your guides through the dense rainforest in search of the gorillas. Along the way, you may encounter forest birds, monkeys, and a variety of indigenous plant species.

Once the gorillas are located, the habituation permit allows an extended observation period of up to four hours, subject to the applicable permit conditions and park regulations. This experience offers a deeper insight into mountain gorilla behavior, feeding habits, family interactions, and conservation efforts.

After the activity, return to your lodge for lunch before departing for Kisoro, the gateway to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

Enjoy the scenic drive through southwestern Uganda’s rolling hills and mountainous landscapes. Upon arrival, check in at your lodge and relax for the evening.

Accommodation: Mount Gahinga Lodge, Mucha Hotel, Amajambere Iwacu Community Camp, or a similar property.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner, according to your confirmed package.

Day 3: Golden Monkey Tracking in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Enjoy breakfast before transferring to the Mgahinga Gorilla National Park headquarters for your golden monkey tracking briefing.

Accompanied by experienced park guides, enter the forest in search of the rare golden monkeys. These distinctive primates are known for their golden-orange fur, lively movements, and preference for bamboo-rich forest habitats.

As you trek through the vegetation, observe the monkeys as they feed, jump between bamboo stems, and interact with members of their group. Your guide will share information about their behavior, habitat, and conservation.

Golden monkey tracking typically takes a few hours, although the duration varies according to the location and movements of the animals and prevailing trail conditions.

The forest also offers opportunities to appreciate the region’s birdlife and natural scenery, with views of the Virunga volcanic landscape where conditions permit.

After the activity, return to the park headquarters and transfer back to your lodge. Spend the remainder of the day relaxing and enjoying the peaceful surroundings of Kisoro.

Accommodation: Mount Gahinga Lodge, Mucha Hotel, Amajambere Iwacu Community Camp, or a similar property.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner, according to your confirmed package.

Day 4: Return Transfer to Kampala or Entebbe

After breakfast, begin your return journey to Kampala or Entebbe.

Travel through southwestern Uganda toward Mbarara, enjoying views of rural communities, rolling hills, and agricultural landscapes along the way.

Depending on your schedule, stop at the Equator in Kayabwe for lunch, photography, and souvenir shopping before continuing to your final drop-off point.

The return journey generally takes approximately 8–9 hours, although traffic, road conditions, and stopovers may affect the travel time.

If you have an international flight departing on the same day, we strongly recommend allowing sufficient time for the road transfer or arranging an additional overnight stay to reduce the risk of missing your flight.

Your four-day gorilla habituation and golden monkey tracking safari concludes upon arrival in Kampala or Entebbe.

Meals: Breakfast and lunch, according to your confirmed package.

Important Information Before Booking

Please read the following information carefully before confirming your safari with Epic Uganda Vacations.

1. Gorilla Habituation and Golden Monkey Permits

Gorilla habituation and golden monkey tracking permits are subject to availability and must be confirmed before your travel arrangements are finalized.

Gorilla habituation permits are limited, and preferred dates may sell out well in advance, particularly during peak travel seasons, including Christmas and school holidays.

We recommend booking early to improve your chances of securing permits for your preferred dates.

2. Safari Rates and Price Validity

The listed prices are based on the supplied rate schedule, which originally stated validity for 2024, 2025, and 2026. As these rates may no longer reflect current operating costs, all prices must be reconfirmed before booking.

The final quotation may vary depending on permit fees, accommodation availability, group size, transport arrangements, and any requested changes to the itinerary.

3. Flexible Itinerary and Personalization

This itinerary is a suggested travel plan and can be adjusted to suit your preferences, budget, travel dates, and accommodation requirements.

Epic Uganda Vacations can arrange budget, mid-range, and luxury versions of this safari, subject to availability. Changes to the number of travelers, accommodation, activities, or trip duration may affect the final price.

4. Accommodation and Trekking Location

The listed accommodation properties are suggestions and are subject to availability. The final choice will depend on your confirmed package and the location of your activities.

Because the gorilla habituation experience takes place in the Rushaga sector of southern Bwindi, accommodation near Rushaga is recommended to help minimize unnecessary driving on the trekking day.

5. Travel Times and Road Conditions

All driving times are estimates and may vary due to weather, traffic, road conditions, stopovers, and other unforeseen circumstances.

We recommend avoiding tight connections with international flights on the final day. An additional night in Kampala or Entebbe may be advisable if your departure schedule is inflexible.

6. Physical Fitness and Trekking Preparation

Gorilla habituation and golden monkey tracking take place in natural forest environments. Trails may be steep, muddy, slippery, or uneven, depending on the weather and terrain.

A reasonable level of physical fitness is recommended. Bring sturdy hiking boots, long trousers, long-sleeved clothing, a waterproof jacket, drinking water, and a small daypack.

Porter services may be available at an additional cost, subject to local arrangements.

7. Wildlife Sightings and Park Regulations

Although Bwindi and Mgahinga are renowned for their primate populations, wildlife sightings and trekking durations cannot be guaranteed.

All visitors must follow the instructions of authorized park guides and comply with applicable wildlife conservation regulations.

The duration of each activity depends on animal movements, terrain, weather, and the relevant permit conditions.

8. Changes to the Safari Program

Although we make every reasonable effort to follow the confirmed itinerary, changes may occasionally be necessary because of weather conditions, road accessibility, park regulations, accommodation availability, or operational requirements.

Epic Uganda Vacations reserves the right to make reasonable adjustments when necessary, while endeavoring to maintain the agreed safari experience and communicate significant changes to clients.

9. Booking Terms and Conditions

All reservations are subject to the final confirmed quotation, payment terms, cancellation policy, permit conditions, and the applicable terms and conditions of Epic Uganda Vacations.

Please review these terms before confirming your booking or making payment.
