22-Day Uganda Birding Safari | Shoebill, Forest & Albertine Rift Birds

22-Day Uganda Birding Safari: Shoebill, Forest & Albertine Rift Birds

Uganda is one of Africa’s most rewarding destinations for birdwatching, offering an exceptional combination of wetlands, tropical forests, savannah, lakes, rivers and Albertine Rift mountain habitats within one country.

This 22-day Uganda birding safari is designed for keen birders who want to explore several of Uganda’s most productive birding destinations at a comfortable pace. The journey combines Mabamba Wetland, Murchison Falls National Park, Budongo Forest, Kibale Forest, Bigodi Wetland, Queen Elizabeth National Park and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, with opportunities to explore additional habitats along the route.

Rather than concentrating on one ecosystem, the safari moves through different habitats, increasing the variety of bird species you can encounter. Wetland birding around Lake Victoria is followed by woodland and savannah birding in northern Uganda, lowland and montane forest birding in western Uganda, and specialist Albertine Rift birding in Bwindi.

The itinerary also leaves room for wildlife and primate experiences, including chimpanzee trekking and an optional mountain gorilla trek, depending on your interests.

Detailed 22-Day Uganda Birding Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Entebbe – Welcome to Uganda

Arrive at Entebbe International Airport, where you will be welcomed by your Uganda birding guide and transferred to your accommodation.

Depending on your arrival time, there may be an opportunity for an introductory birding session around Entebbe. The area around Lake Victoria provides a gentle introduction to Uganda’s birdlife, with gardens, woodland, wetlands and lakeshore habitats supporting a variety of species.

Overnight in Entebbe.

Day 2: Mabamba Wetland – Shoebill Birding

After an early breakfast, travel to Mabamba Wetland, one of Uganda’s best-known destinations for searching for the prehistoric-looking Shoebill.

The wetland is explored by traditional canoe, allowing you to move quietly through channels of papyrus and other aquatic vegetation.

The main target is the Shoebill, but it is important not to overlook the wetland’s other birdlife. Depending on the season and conditions, you may encounter herons, egrets, kingfishers, jacanas, weavers, swamp specialists and other water-associated species.

After the canoe excursion, return to Entebbe for further birding or relaxation.

Overnight in Entebbe.

Day 3: Entebbe – Mabira Forest – Masindi

After breakfast, begin your journey north towards Masindi.

The route provides opportunities for roadside birding and habitat changes as you leave the Lake Victoria basin and move towards Uganda’s central and northern landscapes.

Depending on timing, birding stops can be made around Mabira Forest or other suitable areas along the route.

Continue towards Masindi for your overnight stay.

Day 4: Budongo Forest – Royal Mile Birding

Today is dedicated to birding in Budongo Forest, particularly the famous Royal Mile area.

The forest provides excellent opportunities to search for Central African forest species, forest kingfishers, barbets, turacos, flycatchers and other forest specialists.

Birding here is as much about listening as looking. Your guide will help identify birds by their calls and songs and will work with you to locate species hidden within the forest canopy and undergrowth.

Overnight near Budongo/Masindi.

Day 5: Transfer to Murchison Falls National Park – En-route Birding

After breakfast, continue towards Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda’s largest national park.

The landscape changes dramatically as you approach the park, with open savannah, woodland and grassland replacing the denser forest habitats.

There will be opportunities for birding along the route and, depending on arrival time, an introductory game drive in the park.

Overnight in Murchison Falls National Park.

Day 6: Murchison Falls – Savannah Birding and Game Drive

Start the morning early when bird activity is at its highest.

Explore the savannah and woodland habitats of Murchison Falls, looking for both resident and seasonal species.

The birding experience is complemented by wildlife sightings. Elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, antelopes and, with luck, lions and leopards may be encountered during the drive.

Continue birding during the afternoon before returning to your lodge.

Overnight in Murchison Falls.

Day 7: Murchison Falls – Nile Delta and Boat Cruise

Today combines birding with one of Uganda’s most rewarding wildlife experiences.

Take a boat cruise along the Victoria Nile towards the base of Murchison Falls. The riverbanks and delta habitats provide excellent opportunities for observing waterbirds, waders, kingfishers, herons, egrets and other species.

The cruise also provides close views of hippos, crocodiles and animals coming to the Nile to drink.

Depending on your birding objectives, additional time can be spent exploring the Nile Delta area.

Overnight in Murchison Falls.

Day 8: Murchison Falls – Transfer to Kibale Forest

After an early breakfast, depart Murchison Falls and begin the journey towards Kibale Forest National Park.

This is a longer transfer day, but birding opportunities can be taken along the route where suitable habitat and time allow.

Arrive in the Kibale area later in the day.

Overnight near Kibale Forest.

Day 9: Kibale Forest – Forest Birding

Spend the day exploring the forest habitats of Kibale.

Kibale is widely known for its primates, but its forests also provide excellent opportunities for birdwatching.

Your guide will focus on forest species and other birds associated with the canopy, forest edge and undergrowth.

If your main target is a particular species, the day’s birding can be adjusted around the best available habitat and recent sightings.

Overnight near Kibale.

Day 10: Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary – Community Birding Experience

Today you visit Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, a community-managed wetland close to Kibale.

The walking trail passes through wetland, forest edge and cultivated landscapes, creating opportunities to see a mixture of bird species.

Bigodi is also known for its primates, making it an excellent destination for combining birdwatching with nature and community experiences.

Overnight near Kibale.

Day 11: Kibale – Optional Chimpanzee Trekking

Today can be dedicated to additional birding in Kibale or an optional chimpanzee trekking experience.

Chimpanzee trekking offers the opportunity to enter the forest in search of habituated chimpanzee communities while also experiencing the wider forest ecosystem.

For dedicated birders, the day can instead be structured around additional forest birding and target species.

Overnight near Kibale.

Day 12: Kibale – Queen Elizabeth National Park

After breakfast, travel towards Queen Elizabeth National Park.

The journey passes through crater lakes, tea-growing areas and beautiful western Ugandan countryside.

Depending on arrival time, begin birding around the park’s savannah, woodland or wetland habitats.

Overnight in Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Day 13: Queen Elizabeth National Park – Savannah Birding

Begin the day with an early birding and wildlife drive.

Queen Elizabeth offers a combination of savannah, woodland, crater-lake and wetland habitats, creating opportunities to observe a broad range of bird species.

The game drive also provides opportunities to see elephants, buffaloes, Uganda kob, lions and other wildlife.

Overnight in Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Day 14: Kazinga Channel – Birding Boat Cruise

Today features a boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel, connecting Lake Edward and Lake George.

The channel and its shoreline provide excellent conditions for observing waterbirds and other species associated with aquatic habitats.

Keep your binoculars ready for kingfishers, herons, egrets, fish eagles and other water-associated birds.

The cruise also offers excellent wildlife viewing, particularly hippos, crocodiles, elephants and buffaloes.

Overnight in Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Day 15: Queen Elizabeth – Ishasha Sector – Bwindi

After breakfast, continue towards the Ishasha sector before proceeding to Bwindi.

Ishasha is famous for its tree-climbing lions, although sightings are never guaranteed.

The route provides opportunities for additional savannah birding before the landscape gradually changes as you approach the forested highlands of Bwindi.

Overnight near Bwindi.

Day 16: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park – Buhoma Birding

Today begins your dedicated Albertine Rift birding experience.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is one of Uganda’s most important destinations for forest birding and supports numerous species associated with the Albertine Rift.

Birding is conducted on foot, with your guide helping you identify birds through both sight and calls.

Overnight near Bwindi.

Day 17: Bwindi – Forest Birding and Target Species

Continue exploring Bwindi’s forest trails.

The day’s program can be adapted according to your target species and recent sightings.

For serious birders, the focus can be placed on species that were missed on previous walks, giving you additional time to search for difficult forest birds.

An optional mountain gorilla trek can also be arranged for travelers who wish to combine specialist birding with one of Uganda’s most famous wildlife experiences.

Overnight near Bwindi.

Day 18: Bwindi – Additional Birding

Spend another morning exploring the forest.

Additional birding time is particularly valuable in Bwindi because many forest species are difficult to locate during a single walk. The forest’s steep terrain and dense vegetation mean that patience and time can make a significant difference.

Your guide will tailor the day’s birding around the group’s interests, fitness and target list.

Overnight near Bwindi.

Day 19: Bwindi – Transfer Towards Lake Mburo

After breakfast, begin the journey towards Lake Mburo National Park.

The landscape changes again as you leave the highland forests and move into more open country.

Birding stops can be made along the route where appropriate.

Arrive at Lake Mburo later in the day.

Overnight near Lake Mburo.

Day 20: Lake Mburo National Park – Birding and Wildlife

Lake Mburo provides a different birding experience from the forests of western Uganda.

The park contains open grassland, woodland, wetlands and lakeshore habitats.

Explore the park on a game drive or nature walk, depending on your interests and the conditions.

The park is also home to zebra, impala, buffaloes and other wildlife, making this a good final wildlife component of the safari.

Overnight near Lake Mburo.

Day 21: Lake Mburo – Entebbe

Enjoy an early morning birding session before departing Lake Mburo for Entebbe.

The journey provides opportunities for additional roadside birding and photography.

Depending on your flight schedule, you can also stop at suitable birding locations around Entebbe.

Overnight in Entebbe.

Day 22: Entebbe – Final Birding and Departure

Depending on your international flight time, enjoy a final morning birding experience around Entebbe.

Possible activities include Entebbe Botanical Gardens, lakeshore habitats or another visit to a nearby wetland.

Later, transfer to Entebbe International Airport for your onward flight.

End of your 22-day Uganda birding safari.

Why Choose a 22-Day Uganda Birding Safari?

A longer birding itinerary gives you something that shorter Uganda safaris cannot: time to explore different habitats without rushing from one destination to another.

Uganda’s birding appeal comes from the variety of ecosystems found within a relatively compact country. A single itinerary can combine wetlands, tropical forest, savannah, rivers, lakes, papyrus swamps and Albertine Rift habitats.

The result is not simply a list of parks. It is a journey through different ecological zones, each offering its own collection of bird species.

Bird Species You May Encounter

The exact species list will depend on season, weather, habitat conditions and the skill of the birding guide. Possible sightings include:

  • Shoebill
  • Great Blue Turaco
  • African Fish Eagle
  • Grey Crowned Crane
  • African Green Broadbill
  • Kingfishers
  • Hornbills
  • Sunbirds
  • Turacos
  • Weaver birds
  • Herons and egrets
  • Bee-eaters
  • Barbets
  • Flycatchers
  • Woodpeckers
  • Waders
  • Forest specialists
  • Albertine Rift range-restricted species

For a serious birding group, the itinerary can be modified to concentrate more heavily on particular target species.

Best Time for Birding in Uganda

Uganda offers birding opportunities throughout the year.

The best period depends on what you want to see. For many birders, the presence of migratory birds can add another dimension to the species list during the northern hemisphere migration season, while resident species can be encountered throughout the year.

Weather and trail conditions also vary between Uganda’s different regions, so your exact itinerary should be planned around your target species and preferred style of birding.

Birding Guide and Safari Vehicle

A successful Uganda birding safari depends heavily on the quality of the guiding.

Our birding safaris are designed around experienced guides who understand bird identification, habitats, calls and the practical realities of finding difficult species in the field.

You travel in a 4×4 safari vehicle equipped for wildlife viewing and birdwatching, with opportunities to stop when interesting species are identified along the route.

Can I Add Gorilla or Chimpanzee Trekking?

Yes.

Although this is primarily a birding safari, Uganda makes it possible to combine specialist birdwatching with primate experiences.

Chimpanzee trekking can be incorporated in Kibale Forest, while mountain gorilla trekking can be arranged in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, subject to permit availability.

This combination is particularly attractive to travelers who want a broader Ugandan wildlife experience rather than a bird-only trip.
