Along the way, drive through the lush greenery of Mabira Forest and continue to Jinja to visit the famous Source of the Nile, where the river begins its journey north from Lake Victoria. Enjoy time to explore the area and take photographs before continuing towards Mbale, with a lunch stop along the way.

As you approach the Mount Elgon region, the scenery changes to rolling hills, cultivated farmland, and the green slopes of the mountain. Depending on your arrival time, you may visit Sipi Falls, a beautiful series of waterfalls on the foothills of Mount Elgon.

In the evening, check in at Lacam Lodge for dinner and an overnight stay. Relax and prepare for the mountain trek ahead.

As you climb, you may pass through montane forest, bamboo vegetation, and higher heathland, depending on the trail conditions and selected route. Keep an eye out for forest birds, primates, unusual plants, and spectacular views across eastern Uganda.

Continue towards Piswa Camp, located at approximately 2,850 metres above sea level. The pace will be adjusted to suit the group, with breaks for refreshments, lunch, and photography.

Along the trail, look for distinctive Afro-alpine vegetation, including giant lobelias and other plants adapted to the mountain’s cool conditions. The scenery provides excellent opportunities for landscape photography, nature observation, and quiet moments surrounded by wilderness.

Depending on the approved route, weather, and available time, your guide may arrange a visit to the caldera area, the mountain’s hot springs, or viewpoints overlooking Suam Gorge. These visits depend on the day’s hiking schedule and trail conditions.

Best Time to Hike Mount Elgon

Mount Elgon can be visited throughout the year, but drier periods generally offer more favourable hiking conditions. Rain can occur at any time, and trails may become muddy or slippery, so suitable footwear and waterproof clothing are essential.

Before departure, confirm current trail conditions, park requirements, and camping arrangements with your tour operator and the relevant park authorities.

Important Hiking Information

Mount Elgon is a high-altitude hiking destination, and this itinerary requires a good level of fitness. Conditions can change quickly, and hikers should follow the instructions of their guide and park rangers.

Please note: The four-day programme above retains the original itinerary concept. The precise route and daily distances should be confirmed before booking. Reaching Hunters Cave Camp does not necessarily mean that you have reached Wagagai Peak, Mount Elgon’s highest point at 4,321 metres. If reaching the summit is your goal, ask for a route and duration that explicitly include Wagagai Peak.
