5 Days Uganda Gorilla Trekking and Mount Sabyinyo Hiking Safari

Safari Overview

Experience an unforgettable 5 Days Uganda Gorilla Trekking and Mount Sabyinyo Hiking Safari, combining mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, golden monkey tracking in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, and a challenging hike up Mount Sabyinyo, one of the spectacular volcanoes of the Virunga Mountains.

This adventure is ideal for travellers who want to experience Uganda’s remarkable wildlife, mountain landscapes, and cultural heritage in one safari. You will journey through southwestern Uganda, explore the mist-covered forests of Bwindi, encounter endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat, and track golden monkeys through bamboo forest.

The highlight for adventure lovers is Mount Sabyinyo, which rises to approximately 3,645 metres above sea level. Its rugged ridges and steep slopes make the hike physically demanding. The mountain lies within the Virunga volcanic region, close to the borders of Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. From the summit area, hikers can experience the unique geography of this transboundary mountain region.

The Mount Sabyinyo hike is generally a full-day excursion, often taking around 8–10 hours depending on trail conditions, weather, and group fitness. It is best suited to hikers with good physical fitness and a willingness to tackle steep, uneven terrain. The hike is guided by park personnel, with security arrangements managed according to park regulations.

Detailed 5-Day Uganda Gorilla and Mount Sabyinyo Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Pick-up in Kigali or Kampala and transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Your safari begins with pick-up from your hotel or another agreed location in Kigali, Rwanda, or Kampala, Uganda. Meet your driver-guide and begin the journey to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, home to endangered mountain gorillas.

If you start in Kigali and your schedule allows, you may arrange a Kigali city tour, including a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial at Gisozi. This visit should be planned in advance and depends on your arrival time and the overall travel schedule.

Continue towards southwestern Uganda, enjoying views of the countryside, rolling hills, and rural communities along the way. After arriving at your lodge near Bwindi, settle in and prepare for the following day’s gorilla trekking experience.

Accommodation options:

  • Mid-range: Bakiga Lodge
  • Luxury: Chameleon Hill Lodge

Dinner and overnight stay at your selected accommodation.

Day 2: Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi, Batwa Cultural Visit or Canoeing, and Transfer towards Mgahinga

After an early breakfast, head to the designated gorilla trekking briefing point in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Park staff will explain the trekking rules, safety guidelines, and expected conduct while visiting the gorillas.

You will be assigned to a gorilla trekking group according to the park’s arrangements. Treks vary in length and difficulty depending on the location of the gorilla family and the terrain. If you have concerns about your fitness or mobility, discuss them with your safari operator before the trek; a particular gorilla family or an easy route cannot be guaranteed.

Consider hiring a local porter to help carry your daypack and provide assistance on challenging sections of the trail. This can make the trek more manageable while supporting local livelihoods.

Once your group locates the gorillas, you will normally have one hour to observe them, following the instructions of your guides and park rangers. Watch as the gorillas feed, rest, groom, and interact in their forest habitat.

After trekking, return to the park meeting point and meet your driver-guide. Depending on your timing and arrangements, the afternoon may include a visit with the Batwa community or a canoeing experience. These activities should be confirmed in advance, including their location and availability.

Continue towards your accommodation for the night, taking into account the location of your next day’s activity.

Accommodation options listed for this itinerary:

  • Mid-range: Bakiga Lodge
  • Luxury: Chameleon Hill Lodge

Dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3: Golden Monkey Tracking in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Enjoy breakfast before travelling to the designated briefing point in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. After meeting the park guides, learn about golden monkey tracking procedures, safety requirements, and responsible wildlife viewing.

Golden monkeys are distinctive primates found in the Virunga region. Tracking takes you through a beautiful landscape of bamboo forest and mountain vegetation as guides help locate the troop.

Although golden monkey tracking is often less demanding than mountain gorilla trekking, the experience still involves walking on uneven forest trails and may require a reasonable level of fitness.

Observe the golden monkeys as they move through the vegetation, feed, and interact. Follow the guide’s instructions and maintain the required distance from the animals.

After the tracking experience, return to your lodge for lunch or relaxation, depending on the day’s schedule. Spend the remainder of the afternoon enjoying the surrounding scenery and preparing for the Mount Sabyinyo hike.

Accommodation: Confirm the most suitable lodge based on the location of your golden monkey tracking and Mount Sabyinyo hike.

Dinner and overnight stay.

Day 4: Hike Mount Sabyinyo in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Today is the adventure highlight of your safari: a challenging hike up Mount Sabyinyo.

After an early breakfast, travel to the designated ranger station in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park for registration and a pre-hike briefing. Park staff will explain the route, safety procedures, expected hiking conditions, and the importance of following the guide’s instructions.

Mount Sabyinyo reaches approximately 3,645 metres and is known for its rugged ridges, steep slopes, and distinctive summit formations. The hike requires stamina, good physical fitness, and suitable hiking footwear.

The ascent and descent can take approximately 8–10 hours, depending on the pace of the group, weather, trail conditions, and fitness levels. The route includes steep and uneven sections, so take your time, follow your guide’s advice, and carry sufficient drinking water and appropriate clothing.

The mountain’s location in the Virunga region gives this hike special geographical significance. Conditions and access to particular summit areas are governed by park regulations, so follow all instructions from the authorised guides and rangers.

After completing the hike, return to the ranger station and meet your driver-guide for the transfer to your accommodation.

Dinner and overnight stay.

Day 5: Return to Kigali and Departure

Enjoy breakfast at your lodge before beginning the return journey to Kigali, Rwanda. Your driver-guide will take you to your agreed drop-off point, which may be your hotel or Kigali International Airport.

The departure time should be arranged around your flight schedule and the expected driving time. If you have an international flight, allow a generous buffer for road travel and border formalities.

Your five-day adventure concludes with memories of mountain gorillas, golden monkeys, and the dramatic landscapes of Uganda’s Virunga region.
