Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Uganda: Permits, Prices and How to Book

Uganda is one of the few countries in the world where visitors can experience the remarkable mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. These endangered great apes attract wildlife enthusiasts, photographers and adventure travellers from across the globe. With nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas living in Uganda, the country is one of Africa’s leading destinations for gorilla trekking.

Mountain gorillas live in two protected areas in southwestern Uganda: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Both offer opportunities to trek through beautiful montane forests in search of habituated gorilla families under the guidance of experienced park rangers.

For many travellers, meeting a mountain gorilla family in the wild is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and a major highlight of a Uganda safari.

Where to See Mountain Gorillas in Uganda

Uganda has two national parks where visitors can see mountain gorillas.

1. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is Uganda’s best-known gorilla trekking destination. Located in the country’s southwestern highlands, this UNESCO World Heritage Site protects a large population of mountain gorillas within an ancient tropical forest.

The park has several gorilla trekking sectors, including Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo. Each sector offers access to different habituated gorilla families, and permits are issued for specific sectors and trekking dates.

Besides mountain gorillas, Bwindi is known for its exceptional biodiversity, forest birds, butterflies and rich cultural heritage. Travellers can also enjoy guided nature walks and community experiences around the park.

2. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park lies in Uganda’s southwestern corner, within the Virunga volcanic mountain range. Although smaller than Bwindi, the park offers a spectacular setting of volcanic peaks, bamboo forests and montane vegetation.

Visitors can trek to see the Nyakagezi gorilla family, which is known for living within the park’s protected habitat. Gorilla sightings and family movements are natural, so visitors should always follow the guidance of their ranger.

Mgahinga also offers golden monkey tracking, volcano hiking and opportunities to learn about the cultural heritage of communities living near the park.

What Makes Mountain Gorilla Trekking Special?

Mountain gorillas inhabit high-altitude forests, often at elevations of approximately 2,200 to 4,000 metres above sea level. The cool, humid conditions and dense vegetation create a challenging environment for both gorillas and trekkers.

Their powerful bodies, thick dark fur and expressive faces make these great apes fascinating to observe. Despite their size, mountain gorillas are generally peaceful when undisturbed, although they remain wild animals and must be treated with respect.

During a trek, visitors hike through forest trails with trained guides and trackers who help locate an assigned gorilla family. The terrain can be steep, muddy and uneven, and the time required to find the gorillas varies according to their movements.

Once the family is located, visitors are generally allowed one hour with the gorillas during a standard trek, subject to park regulations and ranger instructions. This short encounter offers an opportunity to observe their feeding, grooming, resting and social interactions.

Requirements for Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

Before booking a gorilla trekking experience, travellers should understand the main requirements.

  • Minimum age: Visitors must generally be at least 15 years old to participate in gorilla trekking.
  • Good health: Anyone with a contagious respiratory illness, such as flu or a cold, should not trek with gorillas. Mountain gorillas are vulnerable to human respiratory infections.
  • A valid gorilla trekking permit: Every visitor needs the appropriate permit for their trekking date and destination.
  • Following ranger instructions: Visitors must observe the required distance, avoid touching or feeding gorillas, and follow all health and safety guidance.
  • Suitable clothing and footwear: Waterproof hiking boots, long trousers, long-sleeved clothing and rain protection are recommended for the forest environment.

Trekkers should also be prepared for physical activity. The hike may last several hours, depending on the gorilla family’s location and the terrain.

What Is a Gorilla Trekking Permit?

A gorilla trekking permit is an official authorisation issued for a visitor to participate in a guided mountain gorilla trek in Uganda. It covers access to the gorilla trekking experience under the applicable park regulations.

The trek begins with a briefing from park staff. Visitors are then assigned to a gorilla family and accompanied by trained guides and trackers into the forest. The search may take a few hours or longer, depending on the gorillas’ movements.

Uganda offers two main gorilla experiences: standard gorilla trekking and gorilla habituation.

Uganda Gorilla Trekking Permit Prices

For the published Uganda Wildlife Authority tariff applicable to 2026, the standard permit prices for foreign non-residents and foreign residents differ. The gorilla habituation experience also has a separate fee.

Visitor category Standard gorilla trekking Gorilla habituation
Foreign non-resident US$800 US$1,500
Foreign resident US$700 US$1,000
Rest of Africa US$500 US$1,000
East African citizen UGX 300,000 UGX 750,000

These are published 2024–2026 tariff rates. Confirm the applicable category, availability and current tariff with the Uganda Wildlife Authority or your safari operator before paying. Rates may change from 2027.

Standard Gorilla Trekking

Standard gorilla trekking is the most popular option. It gives visitors the opportunity to hike through the forest, locate an assigned habituated gorilla family and spend the permitted viewing period observing the animals.

It is suitable for travellers who want an unforgettable wildlife encounter as part of a Uganda safari.

Gorilla Habituation Experience

The gorilla habituation experience is available in the Rushaga sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, subject to availability and current park arrangements.

It allows a small group of visitors to accompany authorised researchers, trackers and guides as they observe gorillas undergoing the gradual habituation process. The experience can provide up to four hours with the gorillas, subject to official rules and the animals’ welfare.

It is particularly appealing to travellers interested in conservation, primate behaviour and a longer forest experience. It is different from standard trekking and requires the appropriate permit.

How to Book Gorilla Permits in Uganda

There are two main ways to arrange a gorilla trekking permit.

1. Book Through the Uganda Wildlife Authority

The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) manages Uganda’s national parks and gorilla tourism permits. Travellers can contact UWA directly to enquire about availability, prices, payment procedures and the required booking information.

Availability is limited because only a controlled number of visitors can trek with each habituated gorilla family each day. It is wise to check availability before making non-refundable travel arrangements.

2. Book Through a Registered Uganda Safari Operator

Another option is to book through a registered and trusted safari company, such as Epic Uganda Vacation. A safari operator can help check permit availability, coordinate the reservation and organise the wider trip.

Depending on the package you choose, this may include:

  • Gorilla permit arrangements.
  • Private safari transport and an experienced driver-guide.
  • Accommodation near Bwindi or Mgahinga.
  • Transfers from Kigali or Entebbe.
  • Other activities, such as wildlife safaris, chimpanzee tracking or cultural visits.

A safari company may charge a service fee or include permit handling within the overall package. Ask for a clear breakdown of the costs and confirmation of your permit arrangements.

When Should You Book Gorilla Permits?

It is best to arrange permits several months ahead, particularly if you plan to travel during popular holiday periods or have fixed dates. The best availability depends on the season, trekking sector, permit category and number of visitors.

Before paying for accommodation and transport, confirm that a suitable permit is available for your preferred date and sector. If your first choice is unavailable, ask whether another date or sector would work with your itinerary.
