Bird Watching in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
When Bwindi Impenetrable National Park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994, it was recognized for its staggering natural wonders. While the park is known for mountain gorilla tracking worldwide, it is also a premier destination for ornithologists. Notably, Bwindi is considered a birding haven because of the 360 bird species recorded within its ancient borders.
The Albertine Rift Endemics
Because Bwindi contains 23 rare Albertine Rift endemic species, it is a “must-visit” for serious bird watchers. Indeed, many of these species are found in very few other locations on earth. Furthermore, the park’s varied altitude allows for a diverse range of habitats, from lowland forests to montane greenery.
The following rare and endemic species are frequently sought after by our guests:
-
Prized Endemics: The African Green Broadbill, Grauer’s Broadbill, and the Handsome Francolin.
-
Forest Specialists: Black-billed Turaco, Bar-tailed Trogon, and the Black Bee-eater.
-
Warblers & Flycatchers: Grauer’s Rush Warbler, Neumann’s Warbler, and the Yellow-eyed Black Flycatcher.
-
Birds of Prey: Mountain Buzzard and the Ayre’s Hawk Eagle.
Premier Birding Spots in Bwindi
During a guided birding safari, different sectors of the park offer unique sightings. Specifically, the Mubwindi Swamp in the Ruhija sector is world-renowned for providing glimpses of the African Green Broadbill. Additionally, the “Waterfall Trail” in Buhoma is an excellent spot for spotting the Cinnamon-chested Bee-eater and various Sunbirds.
The following species are also regularly spotted by our expert guides:
-
Night Birds: African Wood Owl and the Rwenzori Nightjar.
-
Colorful Residents: Western Green Tinkerbird, Mountain Masked Apalis, and the Shelly’s Crimsonwing.
-
Vocal Forest Dwellers: Red-throated Alethe, Archer’s Ground Robin, and the White-bellied Robin-Chat.
