Exploring Mount Gahinga
Mount Gahinga, whose name translates to “little piles of stones,” is a significant peak within the Virunga chain of mountains. This extinct volcano sits on the border of Uganda and Rwanda, nestled between the older Mount Sabyinyo and the towering Mount Muhabura. Furthermore, its unique landscape and name provided the inspiration for the naming of Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
Geography and Natural Features
Standing at an elevation of 11,394 feet above sea level, Mount Gahinga serves as a beautiful extension of the Mufumbiro range. This stratovolcano features a unique 180-meter swampy caldera at its summit, which distinguishes it from its neighbors.
The slopes boast a rich Afro-montane forest, primarily consisting of bamboo. Consequently, this lush vegetation provides a vital habitat for endangered species. While mountain gorillas (Internal Link) and golden monkeys are the most famous residents, other primates like baboons, vervet monkeys, colobus monkeys, and blue monkeys also call this forest home.
Planning Your Visit to Mgahinga
The park sits approximately 483 kilometers south of Kampala. Typically, the drive from the capital takes between 9 to 10 hours. Because the volcano is extinct, visitors can explore the rugged terrain without the risk of eruptions.
Top Activities at Mount Gahinga
Hiking Adventures
In contrast to the steeper Sabyinyo, hiking Mount Gahinga is relatively easy. Most physically fit hikers reach the peak in about 6 hours. Currently, a hiking permit costs $75 per person. One major advantage for travelers is that the park does not require advance booking for these permits.
The adventure begins with a professional briefing at the park headquarters. Afterward, authorities assign guides and porters to the group. Additionally, the park provides hiking sticks, so visitors do not need to carry their own.
Gorilla Trekking Tours
Gorilla trekking (Internal Link) remains the primary attraction of the region. Experts recommend combining a Gahinga hike with a gorilla trek for a wholesome experience. These tours commence at 8:00 AM following a briefing session at the Ntebeko park offices.
Golden Monkey Trekking
The Virunga region is the only place on Earth where you can find these endangered primates. Mgahinga National Park hosts the largest population, with an estimated 3,500 individuals. A golden monkey (Internal Link) trekking permit costs $100, and the experience typically lasts over an hour.
Bird Watching
The bamboo forests support approximately 180 bird species, including 12 species endemic to the Virunga Conservation Area (External Link). The dry season offers the best viewing opportunities for spotting rare birds such as:
-
Mountain Yellow Warbler
-
Blue-headed Coucal
-
Alpine Swift
-
Mountain Oriole
-
African Olive Pigeon
