Volcanoes National Park: The Heart of Rwanda’s Gorilla Conservation
Volcanoes National Park, also known as Parc National des Volcans, is situated in the northwestern corner of Rwanda. Covering approximately 160 $km^2$ of lush rainforest, the park encompasses five of the eight volcanic peaks within the Virunga Mountains: Bisoke, Karisimbi, Muhabura, Gahinga, and Sabinyo.
This legendary destination is bordered by Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda and Virunga National Park in the DRC. Together, these regions provide a sanctuary for the world’s remaining population of endangered Mountain Gorillas.
A Pioneer in African Conservation
History was made in 1925 when this area was first gazetted as a small protected zone. It holds the distinction of being the very first National Park created in Africa. Originally, the park was established with the intention of protecting primates from poachers who threatened the species for food and trade.
By 1929, the borders were extended further into the Belgian Congo to form the Albert National Park. In the modern era, the park has become a model for sustainable tourism. Currently, 10% of all park revenues are shared with local communities to support development and infrastructure.
The Legacy of Dian Fossey
The survival of the mountain gorilla is largely attributed to the work of Dian Fossey. Arriving in Rwanda in 1967, the Karisoke Research Center was established by Fossey between Mount Karisimbi and Mount Bisoke.

While the Mountain Gorillas are the prime attraction, the park’s biodiversity is vast. While traversing the jungle, the “sweet melodies” of birds can be heard alongside the calls of various mammals.
