First, Dien fossys Tomb together with Gorilla cemetery located within the former Karisoke research Camp is that perfect attraction that has attracted several visitor attentions at volcanoes national park. Its hike is done in remembrance and appreciation of the hard work of Dian Fossey established in Karisoke scientific center in the area just between 2 volcanoes of Mt Bisoke as well as Mount Karisimbi.

Dien set up her camp at Volcanoes national park found at an altitude of nearly 3000meters (more than 9000 feet), though it was neglected in the 1990s during the war that claimed many people’s lives.

Dian Fossey alongside Jane Goodall was revolutionary primatologist who didn’t shy off but the experience there deep love for primates going ahead to advocate for their rights and safety, in 1967, Dian Fossy and the counterpart established the Karisoke Research Centre in Rwanda and studied the endangered mountain gorillas for approoximately18 years. When Dien fossys “will” was found, her remains were returned to her research center where she was laid to rest alongside the gorillas she had labored to protect. Thus remembering her by having hikes to her burial grounds that are open to visitors all year round

 Hiking to Dien fossys grave takes approximately two hours one way with stop over for water in between all you need is being feet and determined to beat the muddy terrains that require care while hiking.

Some of the essential requirements to make a successful hiking includes among others, walking sticks, Pack some light snacks, bottles of water, gaiters to avoid the red, Wear shoes that have grip, and you won’t mind getting muddy, wear long pants and a shirt to be on the safe side, your passport and permit are very vital.

Interestingly, the following words are inscribed in her grave: “No one loved gorillas more, Rest in peace, dear friend eternally protected In this sacred ground For you” Furthermore, Dien Fossy in her book, emphasized that when one discovers the importance of life, they will depend less on all that is past and focus more on preserving the future. Now, the conservation effort left behind by Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund is keeping roughly 10 gorilla groups in Rwanda, with several projects to assist conserve these gorillas plus other animals within the area.

The journey starts in the morning with a visit to Kinigi at the headquarters of Volcanoes national park for a short briefing before following a trail outside the dense forest with a clear chance of sighting the Virunga volcanoes especially Karisimbi and Bisoke after which the karisoke research center was named.

Apart from gorillas, the hiking trail takes you to heaven to numerous bird species for birders endemic to the Albertine rift valley and stands at an altitude of approximately 2900m to 3000m above the sea level. Upon reaching gravesite, you will see the grave for Dian Fossey and her friend the Gorillas that were killed or died alone.
